WHY WAIT TO GET IN SHAPE

get in shape

So many people wait until January to get in shape and start working towards their fitness goals. Why? I don’t understand the mentality of waiting until January when you could be working towards your fitness goals now. Some people wait until Spring as well because they know they have to fit into that summer dress or shorts or whatever outfit they want to get into. This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever seen in all my years as a fitness professional. If you want to be able to fit into a certain dress or outfit, you need to start at least six months from the outset. So you have TIME to reach your goals. If you think you can get there in a month or two, you are fooling yourself!

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS DONT WORK

A lot of people will tell me that they wait to start working out, eating better, etc until the New Year because it’s a new year. It’s a new time to set resolutions, blah blah blah, but did you know that most New Years resolutions simply never work out? People almost never reach their New Years resolutions. They start and they give up. This type of thinking will only set you up for failure because most people who have this type of thinking are looking for a quick fix. They think they will reach their goals in a few months. It doesn’t work like that. You are going to have obstacles that get in the way and you will need to be strong mentally to overcome those obstacles.

GIVE YOURSELF MORE TIME

There are many reasons to start now as opposed to the New Year and the obvious one is that you will simply have more time to reach your goals. Setting goals and reaching them is not a linear thing. You may start to see results but then hit a plateau. Or maybe you are getting your workouts in and eating healthy like you should and then you get in a car accident, which slows progress. It can happen and has happened to a few of my clients. If they had the mentality of thinking they will reach their goals in a few months, they probably would have given up but they didn’t. They kept going.

START FEELING BETTER NOW

Another reason to start now is you get to start feeling better both physically and emotionally. Working out and eating healthy makes you feel good. The end goal should not be the only reason. Don’t you want to feel good and energetic every day? If you do, why would you want to wait until January to feel good. See how it doesn’t make any sense to wait?

DONT SET YOURSELF UP FOR FAILURE

Psychologically it is better to avoid New Years resolutions. You go to the trouble of making them. You wrote them down. You set out the actions that you are going to take to reach these New Years goals and you also set a date to reach your goals. And then it happens. Something comes up to get in the way of your workouts or you have a birthday to go to and you don’t end up eating the healthiest. What happens next is you feel bad about yourself and instead of just going with the flow and start back up the next day, you give up. New Years resolutions are an all or nothing proposition which  can only set you up for failure. Had you started earlier, you wouldn’t have had the pressure of a New Years goal and most likely you would have not worried about the piece of cake or a missed workout and realized that this is all part of the process and journey of changing your life and reaching your goals.

So now do you see why you should start working towards your fitness goals instead of waiting until the New Year or even worse the Springtime? Start now and you will most definitely reach your goals and in the meantime you will start to feel more energetic, happy and healthy!
